And The Winner Is…

Just a short post to talk about the Grammy Awards last night. More exactly one award presentation and what it means for people with disabilities of any kind.

Stevie Wonder was on stage with acapella supergroup Pentatonics to give a tribute to Maurice White of Earth Wind And Fire. Of course it was awesome. And Pentatonics were very honoured to be performing with the great Stevie Wonder.

Then they were to present the award for Song of the Year. Pentatonics announced the nominees and the envelope was given to Stevie. He struggled to open it but would not take help. When he had it open he turned it so the inside was facing the audience and had a huge smile on his face as he said “You can’t read this, you can’t read braille, nana nana na na”! Then he said more seriously,  “I just want to say before saying the winner, that we need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability.”

Wow, it doesn’t get better than that. Stevie Wonder has never been a presenter at an awards show before. I never gave it much thought. But someone decided why not and made it happen. This wasn’t just a baby step, it was a giant leap forward.

Thank you, Stevie, you made us all winners.

Lydia!
