Song Lyric Sunday 04/22/18 – “Sisters”

I grew up on watching movies like White Christmas. I would take a guess that I have seen it at least a dozen times. I love the rapport between Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. However, it was Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen who stole the show for me.

After all, they played sisters and I always wanted a relationship with my sister like they had. My sister was 8 years older than I and that is a big difference. I felt like we both grew up as only children since she left home at 17 to go to school elsewhere. I was only eight, the same age she was when I was born.

But the thing is she did do a lot. She bought me my favorite doll for Christmas one year. She took me to see John Denver when she and her husband really didn’t want to go but they ended up having a good time. She gave me my love for ’60’s music by letting me listen to hers. When I left my first husband she scoured garage sales to find me furniture and other basics. But we just were never able to share the same things as sisters in the movies did.

A fun fact about this song in the movie – Vera-Ellen’s voice on most of the songs was dubbed by Trudy Stevens, except for “Sisters”. Rosemary Clooney sang both parts of this one and later recorded a single version with her sister Betty.

Sisters sisters
There were never such devoted sisters
Never had to a chaperon
No sir
I’m here to keep my eye on her

Caring sharing every little thing that we are wearing
When a certain gentle man arrived from Rome
She wore the dress and I stayed home
All kinds of weather we stick together
The same in the rain or sun
Two different faces but in tight places
We think and we act as one uh huh
Those who’ve seen us know that not a thing can come between us
Many men have tried to split us up but no one can
Lord help the mister that come between me and my sister
And Lord help the sister that come between me and my man

All kinds of weather we stick together
The same in the rain or sun
Two different faces but in tight places
We think and we act as one uh huh
Those who’ve seen us no that not a thing can come between us
Many men have tried to split is up but no one can
Lord help the mister that comes between me and my siter
And lord help the sister that comes between me and my man
Sisters sisters
Sisters sisters

  1. I LOVE this movie and I’m pretty sure I watched it with my sister for the first time. She gave me my love of old movies. Sometimes, we can’t have exactly what we want, but at least you recognize your sister’s role in your life. Thanks so much for sharing!
