Song Lyric Sunday – “All Of Me”

It seems like the only posts I have gotten out in the last month have been for Helen’s lyric challenge over at This Thing Called Life One Day At A Time. That will be changing this week as I have several posts on the go.

This week’s theme for Song Lyric Sunday is “a song title or lyric that is a metaphor”. At first, I thought this was going to be tough, but really I think at least 90% of songs are based on metaphors! I didn’t have to look very far to find the right fit for me.

“All Of Me” is a ballad written by John Legend for his then wife-to-be, Chrissy Teigen. It tells the tale of their love story using several metaphors to show the ups and downs of their love. This is real love – messy but forever.

This song is also a very personal one. It is the story of my relationship with my husband. When we were going to renew our vows in 2014 we wanted this song to be sung by a friend of ours. It speaks volumes about what is wrong and what is so very right about our relationship.

My bipolar and both of our bouts of depression have made for some tough times. “All your curves and all your edges” refers to more than her/my body shape. It is the reality of who we are. “Perfect imperfections” alludes to everything wrong being totally okay as part of the whole package.

One of my favourite parts of the song is the pre-chorus – “My head’s under water but I’m breathing fine. You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind”.

When I see John and Chrissy together I see my Hubby and I. He is fairly serious and grounded while she is “out there” in a wonderful way. But as a couple, they are just the right fit.

So are we.

Lydia!

I wasn’t sure which video I wanted to use but decided to go with the duet version featuring violinist Lyndsey Stirling.

“All Of Me”

What would I do without your smart mouth?
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
You’ve got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down
What’s going on in that beautiful mind
I’m on your magical mystery ride
And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright

My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh

How many times do I have to tell you
Even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I’m around through every mood
You’re my downfall, you’re my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you

My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh

Give me all of you
Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts
Risking it all, though it’s hard

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh

  1. This song is still difficult for me, as it was out the spring that a serious relationship ended. We were set to see John in concert and then it was all over. I listened to this one to hear Stirling, as I love her, as a new violin player. This is a beautiful song, still, and thank you for sharing this version. I did end up going to the concert still, and I wrote a review and a farewell to my relationship too, through it all.

    1. Wow, that is quite a story. I am so sorry about your relationship. I can see how this would be a difficult song for you but I am glad you saw him in concert and you liked the video with Lindsey Stirling (I corrected her name spelling). I love her too.

    1. I actually get choked up when I hear this song because it really is the story of my hubby and I. And yes, Lindsey Stirling is amazing. You should look up her YouTube channel. She has performed with literally everyone. She got booted off America’s Got Talent by one of the judges when she was thought to be the front runner. She “retaliated” by flooding the internet with videos and soon everyone was wanting to do a song with her! She has worked hard as being a musician and not a vocalist is not easy in this day and age.
