Song Lyric Sunday – “Seasons Of Love”

When I saw this weeks topic for Song Lyric Sunday from Helen at This Thing Called Life One Day At A Time a song just jumped out at me. But it wasn’t this one. It was “Please Mr. Postman” by the Marvelettes. However, when I mentioned the theme to my Hubby, he mentioned this one immediately and it grew on me to the point of changing.

“Seasons of Love” is probably the best-known song from the soundtracks of the Broadway musical (1996)  and movie (2005) “Rent”. It was written and composed by Jonathan Larsen.

While I never got to see the musical, I did see the movie and was very touched by the themes and stories told. I would still love to see the musical if it ever came around again.

Anyway, “Seasons of Love” starts off with stating that there are 525,600 minutes in the years of a life. This is quite overwhelming in lots of ways. I liken this to pennies. It takes 100 pennies for just one dollar. By themselves they aren’t worth anything and when you have enough to buy something they are so heavy. That is the same feeling as the number of minutes in a year.

However, when you measure the year by other things, like sunsets, coffee, etc., the reference is easier to imagine, with love being the best measure of all. It is definitely a song about relationships whether it be with time or each other.

An interesting fact about this song is that it was originally sung at the beginning and middle of the second act where the people references were relevant. The movie moved it to the opening seqence (as shown in the video) which threw out the cohesiveness for people who didn’t know the story. It worked for me.

I have left the voice references in for effect as this is truly a “show” piece and not a stand-alone song.

  1. Like minds! We even picked the same video! LOL!

I knew the song before I sat down and actually watched the movie thanks to my children. I was so moved by the movie, I couldn’t wait to see the stage show and got the chance two years later in Chicago. Such a great show and this song is simply amazing. 🙂
