Song Lyric Sunday – “See You Again”

So, I am a little late to the party for Song Lyric Sunday this week. Usually, I am chomping at the bit to find out the topic (which Helen usually posts around 6 pm my time – PST/PDT). It is Sunday almost 1 pm and I just found it. It has just been a very strange and enlightening weekend. But I won’t go into that here.

Helen Vahdati of This Thing Called Life One Word At A Time has a wonderful little weekly challenge that is downright addicting. She gives us a word or phrase as a theme and leaves us to find a song lyric and video that fits. There is lots of lee-way (which I took this week) and even more fun. If you want to check it out, you can go to this week’s theme page and look at the pingbacks. Or, you can join in! This week’s theme is drive/driving.

Okay, my pick. On the surface, you may say that this song is not about driving. And you would be correct. It is a love song for an actor who happens to have played a character in 5 1/2 movies about driving (He wasn’t in 3 or 8 and died halfway through filming #7). I mention the half because the cast and crew were so devoted to Paul Walker that after an appropriate grieving time they finished “Furious 7” using old footage and Paul Walker’s brothers in his place. “See You Again” was the theme from that movie.

While we don’t get it in our area this weekend marked the premiere of a television documentary “I Am Paul Walker”. It apparently shows all sides of him and everyone who loved him. I have included an excellent Trailer (is this my second week showing two videos? LOL)

Back to the song. It is about driving in many underlying ways. It is presented at the end of the movie where Walker is shown in one vehicle and Vin Diezel is in another. Their vehicles go side by side and then veer off in different directions with Paul/Brian riding off in the sunset. This also appears at the end of the song’s video. Paul Walker was a driving force in these movies. His character, Brian, starts out as a cop, sets Deizel’s character, Dom, free and then is recruited by the feds to work with Dom (at this point they hate each other) to bring down a Mexican drug lord. They end up working together. Did Brian go to the dark side? Did Dom come clean? It was more a “meet in the middle” relationship where they blurred the lines for the good of the situation.

The song itself is very emotional for me. I don’t know why, but it can bring me to tears every time I hear it. I know it is partly because it is a sad story about a guy who was kind, generous, a good father, brother, son & friend. He just liked to drive very very fast or be in a car that is. So, I guess you could say he went doing what he loved best.

A cute aside to the song, Charlie Puth was basically known as an up and coming songwriter when he was asked to write the chorus to Wiz Khalifa’s rap. He wrote it, they loved it, but they wanted a big name to sing it. Puth decided to push the matter and said they could have the chorus only if he could sing it. Wonder how that worked out for him? LOL!

See You Again

It’s been a long day without you, my friend
And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again
Damn, who knew all the planes we flew
Good things we’ve been through
That I’ll be standing right here
Talking to you about another path I
Know we loved to hit the road and laugh
But something told me that it wouldn’t last
Had to switch up look at things different see the bigger picture
Those were the days hard work forever pays now I see you in a better place
How could we not talk about family when family’s all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gonna be with me for the last
It’s been a long day without you, my friend

And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again

First you both go out your way
And the vibe is feeling strong and what’s
Small turn to a friendship, a friendship
Turn into a bond and that bond will never
Be broken and the love will never get lost
And when brotherhood come first then the line
Will never be crossed established it on our own
When that line had to be drawn and that line is what
We reach so remember me when I’m gone

How could we not talk about family when family’s all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gonna be with me for the last ride

So let the light guide your way hold every memory
As you go and every road you take will always lead you home
It’s been a long day without you, my friend
And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again
