Song Lyric Sunday – We Are The Champions

I am taking a lot of liberties on this one even for me. But since Helen of This Thing Called Life One Word At Time chose “take/taking” as this week’s theme, I believe it is all relevant.

Yesterday my hubby and I went and saw “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the Queen biopic which opened Friday. Queen wrote the score to an important part of my life. I remember sitting in the back of a white pick-up truck in the middle of a prairie hay field with a friend singing all the words (and parts) to the song Bohemian Rhapsody like it was yesterday. And “We Are The Champions” was the anthem of the 70’s…well along with “We Will Rock You”, also by Queen.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers but “We Are The Champions” is played near the end of the film and the words are very relevant to Freddie in a sort of Frank Sinatra “My Way” vein. The line “I’ve taken my bows and my curtain calls” speaks to the highs and lows of his life, which is why I picked this song for the theme.

The song went to number 2 on the British charts and number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It has been covered by numerous groups and artists, used as a theme at amateur and professional sporting events. But no one has ever done it better than Queen.

Lydia!

Oh, and while there were a lot of liberties taken on the facts, the movie was very good and the cast, headed by Rami Malic was exceptional!

“We Are The Champions”

I’ve paid my dues
Time after time.
I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime.
And bad mistakes ‒
I’ve made a few.
I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face
But I’ve come through.

(And I need just go on and on, and on, and on)

We are the champions, my friends,
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions of the world.

I’ve taken my bows
And my curtain calls.
You brought me fame and fortune, and everything that goes with it.
I thank you all.
But it’s been no bed of roses,
No pleasure cruise.
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race,
And I ain’t gonna lose.

(And I need just go on and on, and on, and on)

We are the champions, my friends,
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions of the world.

We are the champions, my friends,
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end.
We are the champions.
We are the champions.
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions.
