Song Lyric Sunday – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough

I have been away from SLS for a while, but am glad to be back. Jim Adams from A Unique Title For Me picked Mountain/Hill as this week’s theme.

I picked “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (the original Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell version) for several reasons.

  1. It is a classic song and the first one that springs to mind for “Mountain”.
  2. Gaye & Terrell were magic together
  3. It was featured on one of the best movie scores ever and the video even has the working cassette from Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol. 1)
  4. I just saw Diana Ross on the Grammys and a montage of her hits included her very successful version.
  5. The song shows the lengths someone would go to rekindle their love. I think many of us wish to have a relationship like that.

The song was written by the great team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. They wrote many songs for others and had hits of their own with “Solid” and “Found A Cure” among others. Gaye and Terrell’s version of “Ain’t No Mountain” was released in 1967 and made it to the top twenty on the Billboard charts (peaking at No. 3 on the R&B charts and No. 19 on the Pop charts).

Ain’t no Mountain High Enough

Listen, baby
Ain’t no mountain high
Ain’t no valley low
Ain’t no river wide enough, babyIf you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far (don’t worry, baby)
Just call my name
I’ll be there in a hurry
You don’t have to worry
Cause baby there

Ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe

Remember the day
I set you free
I told you you could always count on me, darling
From that day on, I made a vow
I’ll be there when you want me
Some way, some how
Cause baby there

Ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe

Oh no, darling

No wind, no rain
Nor winter storm
Can’t stop me baby

No no baby

Cause you are my goal

If you’re ever in trouble
I’ll be there on the double
Just send for me

Oh baby!

My love is alive
Way down in my heart
Although we are miles apart

If you ever need a helping hand
I’ll be there on the double
Just as fast as I can

Don’t you know that there…

Ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you
Ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
Ain’t no river wide enough
Ain’t no mountain high enough
Ain’t no valley low enough
