Song Lyric Sunday – “My Melody Of Love”

This week’s pick from guest host Jim Adams at A Unique Title For Me may seem a no-brainer at first glance; however, it is challenging in the number of songs out there that fit. The topic is Harmony/Melody/Music. I immediately focussed on Melody and a song that reminds me of my Mom.

I talk a lot about my father’s influence on my love for music. Well, my mother may not have been as “into it” as Dad, but she had her favorites. One of the stand-outs was Bobby Vinton. “My Melody of Love” was a favorite so I heard it a lot growing up. Mom has been gone for almost 25 years now but this song was still the first one I thought of.

The polka influenced song was originally written in German and was a hit. Other versions were recorded in French and Spanish before a British duo released an English version in early 1974. Vinton built on his Polish heritage and the polka melody to make the song more “his”. It was released later in 1974 and made the Hot 100 charts (No. 3 for 2 weeks, No. 1 on Easy Listening for 1 week). It was the singer’s biggest hit in 10 years.

The song also became the theme song for the aptly titled “The Bobby Vinton Show” which was on our TV, of course, every week from 1975 – 1978.

Like my pick last week, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, this song is a very upbeat tale of heartbreak and lost love. Maybe there’s a lesson there.
