Jim Adams over at A Unique Title For Me picked School/Books/Learning as this week’s Song Lyric Sunday topic.
I picked this song (not to be confused with “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong) because of the simple and positive message –
“But I do know that one and one is two,
And if this one could be with you,
What a wonderful world this would be”
According to Wikipedia, the song was written by Lou Adler and Herb Alpert with Sam Cooke adding some extra lyrics on his version which was released in 1960. Herman’s Hermits put out a cover version four years later and it charted higher on Billboard’s Top 100 at 4, with Cooke hitting 12. Peter Noone (Herman) once said in an interview that they covered the song as a tribute to Cooke who passed away in 1964.
I am including both the Sam Cooke and Herman’s Hermits version as the former is the classic version and the latter is my personal favorite.
“Wonderful World”
Don’t know much biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the French I tookBut I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me, too
What a wonderful world this would be
Don’t know much about geography
Don’t know much trigonometry
Don’t know much about algebra
Don’t know what a slide rule is for
But I do know one and one is two
And if this one could be with you
What a wonderful world this would be
Now, I don’t claim to be an A student
But I’m trying to be
For maybe by being an A student, baby
I can win your love for me
Don’t know much about history
Don’t know much biology
Don’t know much about a science book
Don’t know much about the French I took
But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me, too
What a wonderful world this would be
La ta ta ta ta ta ta (History)
Hmm-mm-mm (Biology)
La ta ta ta ta ta ta (Science book)
Hmm-mm-mm (French I took)
Yeah, but I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me, too
What a wonderful world this would be
Writers: Herb Alpert, Lou Adler, Sam Cooke
Great classic choice, Lydia! 😊👍

Such a fantastic song! No surprise several of us thought of the same song. I don’t think I have heard the version by Herman’s Hermits before. Loved listening to it.

Yes, it is kind of an obvious choice for this theme. You should take a listen to James Taylor’s version as well.

I can see the button, but when I click it it doesn’t register. Don’t worry, the problem is on my end. None of my likes anywhere are working 😦

Great song! I thought about using this one as well. Thanks for the Herman’s Hermits version. I don’t think I have heard it before.

Thanks, Mary. I think HH’s version was mostly popular in Britan and Canada but I might be wrong.
