Song Lyric Sunday – “I Want To Be Just Like You”

I’m BAAAACK!

I wasn’t expecting to lead off with a reblog and then an SLS but you have to start somewhere and while I have a lot to catch up on, I figured I would ease my way back.

Today is Father’s Day and so Jim Adams over at A Unique Title For Me picked Dad/Father/Barbecue as this week’s SLS topic. Head on over to Jim’s blog for challenge rules, future topics, and other pics for this week.

The first song that came to mind was Elvis’ “Don’t Cry Daddy” but I realized that is too sad for the occasion. Then it hit me and I went straight to a song that I had used once for a Father’s Day video at our church. Philips, Craig, and Dean’s “I Want To Be Just Like You,” tells the story of a man who wants to strive to live a life of faith because “he wants to be like me.”

Don’t we all want the best for our children no matter what our beliefs are? And it is no secret that no matter what our lifestyle is, good or bad, our kids mirror us especially when they are very young. As they grow, they may do the opposite (again good or bad). However, if we can make a good impression when they are small and carry on the lifestyle we want for them, we can probably both become better for it.

Philips, Craig, and Dean have been around the Contemporary Christian music scene for a very long time. Their songs mix beautiful harmonies with positive messages that anyone can relate to.

So Happy Father’s Day to all Dads, Father figures, and those like my hubby, Dads to fur-kids, everywhere.

“I Want To Be Just Like You”

He climbs in my lap for a goodnight hug
He calls me Dad and I call him Bub
With his faded old pillow and a bear named Pooh
He snuggles up close and says “I want to be like you”
I tuck him in bed and I kiss him goodnight
Trippin’ over the toys as I turn out the light
And I whisper a prayer that someday he’ll see
He’s got a father in God ’cause he’s seen Jesus in me

Lord, I want to be just like You
‘Cause he wants to be just like me
I want to be a holy example
For his innocent eyes to see
Help me be a living Bible, Lord
That my little boy can read
I want to be just like You
‘Cause he wants to be like me

Got to admit I’ve got so far to go
Make so many mistakes and I’m sure that You know
Sometimes it seems no matter how hard I try
With all the pressures in life I just can’t get it all right
But I’m trying so hard to learn from the best
Being patient and kind, filled with Your tenderness
‘Cause I know that he’ll learn from the things that he sees
And the Jesus he finds will be the Jesus in me
Right now from where he stands I may seem mighty tall
But it’s only ’cause I’m learning from the best Father of them all
