I am a little late to the party but I really wanted to participate in this week’s challenge. Jim, from A Unique Title For Me, has picked a song from a movie as the theme. I swear I could probably do about 100 and still not pick all the ones that are suitable for me but this one I think is the best because it not only closed out the movie nicely, but it paid respects to one of the main characters in a beautiful way.
I am of course talking about “Furious 7” of the famous Fast and Furious movie franchise. While filming was still going on, Paul Walker, who played Brian O’Connor, was killed ironically in a car crash. Cars were as much a passion of Paul’s as they were Brian’s. Walker was in the passenger seat when the high speeding car crashed and exploded into flames. Both he and his friend, Richard Rogas died instantly.
The movie stopped filming for a while so that everyone could regroup after this tragedy. As everyone connected to the project dealt with personal emotions, they also had to make decisions on whether to rewrite parts of the script or stop the project altogether. When the cast, crew, and executives agreed it was what Paul would have wanted, they made the necessary changes to make it all work.
One of those changes was to have a song written in memory of Paul Walker. Rapper Wiz Khalifa and singer/songwriter Charlie Puth came up with a beautiful song. The rap lyrics matched the strength of the cars and the characters while Puth’s lyrics were soft and moving. Charlie Puth has often told the story that he was asked to submit some lyrics and a melody to pair with Khalifa’s part. He wrote the words, they liked them; however, they wanted a “big name” performer to sing them. So as a relative unknown Puth said boldly “if you want my lyrics I will let you have them … only if I get to sing them.” It was a bold move but they tested it with Wiz’s part and the rest is, well, history.
The song was on the Billboard Top 100 for 12 (nonconsecutive) weeks and was the breakout hit for both artists who were billed as “Wiz Khalifa, featuring Charlie Puth.”
Oh, yeah, they didn’t kill Brian off in the movie. Instead one of Paul’s brothers stood in for him at a distance on the beach with his family. Then, Brian and Dom Drive off in separate cars (using past scenes). When they reach a fork in the road, Brian/Paul drives into the sunset… to the tune of this song (and the sequence is in the video as well).
It’s been a long day without you, my friend
And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh, I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again[Verse 1: Wiz Khalifa]
Damn, who knew?
All the planes we flew, good things we been through
That I’d be standing right here talking to you
‘Bout another path, I know we loved to hit the road and laugh
But something told me that it wouldn’t last
Had to switch up, look at things different, see the bigger picture
Those were the days, hard work forever pays
Now I see you in a better place, uh[Refrain: Wiz Khalifa]
How can we not talk about family when family’s all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gon’ be with me for the last ride
[Chorus: Charlie Puth]
It’s been a long day without you, my friend
And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh, I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again
Aah oh, aah oh
Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Yeah
[Verse 2: Wiz Khalifa]
First, you both go out your way and the vibe is feeling strong
And what’s small turned to a friendship, a friendship turned to a bond
And that bond will never be broken, the love will never get lost
And when brotherhood come first, then the line will never be crossed
Established it on our own when that line had to be drawn
And that line is what we reached, so remember me when I’m gone
[Refrain: Wiz Khalifa]
How can we not talk about family when family’s all that we got?
Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gon’ be with me for the last ride
[Bridge: Charlie Puth]
So let the light guide your way, yeah
Hold every memory as you go
And every road you take
Will always lead you home, home
[Chorus: Charlie Puth]
It’s been a long day without you, my friend
And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
We’ve come a long way from where we began
Oh, I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again
When I see you again
[Post-Chorus: Charlie Puth]
Aah oh, aah oh
Wooooh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Yeah
My late husband was the ‘Fast and Furious’ fan. I never took much interest in the movies UNTIL “See You Again.” I fell in love with the song and it led me to watch the movie, which I also enjoyed. Great pick, Lydia! 😀

Thanks, Felecia. When I saw the topic weeks ago I knew I was going to do it. I have been having troubles getting anything on my blog lately but I was definitely going to do this one. I had a long speil, but this song moved me deeply, often to tears (as did the movie)

Thanks for adding this song Lydia. It is like two different songs with the piano playing and the rapping.

Yes, it does, and they were written separately but they blend so well together!

I like this. I never saw any of the movies, though. Such a sad thing to happen, and a nice tribute to keep on filming.
