Song Lyric Sunday – “Easy”

When I first read this week’s theme “Let Go”, I drew a blank. I mean there are obvious choices like the theme from “Frozen” or the Beatles’ “Let It Be”. But if you have been following my previous posts here you will know I don’t settle on the obvious.

Lionel Richie came to the forefront lately as my Hubby and I watched the rebooted “American Idol”. He was a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Katy Perry. I gained new respect for the former Commodores singer as he encouraged these young artists. He had come across to me in the past as arogant or egotistical. However, none of that showed during the series. In fact he spoke often of when the group were rejected but kept trying, of when he would forget lyrics, and how he dealt with stage fright.

How does this song fit the category?

That’s easy (pardon the pun)!

This song is about letting go of a relationship that isn’t going anywhere so he is. The fact that he is letting go makes him feel relaxed like a Sunday morning where all the cares of work and life are put on hold for a few hours. The second verse talks more about the world than just a romance gone wrong. We all just want to be able to be ourselves.

This is a fight I had with myself for years. I was always trying to be who I thought everyone else wanted me to be. And I certainly understand the line “I’m not happy when I try to fake it”.

The song was written by Lionel Richie and originally recorded by The Commodores in 1977 on their album “Commodores”. Richie recorded it on his own for the solo album “Encore” in 2002.

Thanks to Helen of This Thing Called Life One Day At A Time once again for coming up with a great theme.

Lydia!

“Easy”
Know it sounds funny
But I just can’t stand the pain
Girl, I’m leaving you tomorrow
Seems to me girl
You know I’ve done all I can
You see I begged, stole
And I borrowed

Ooh, that’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning

Why in the world
Would anybody put chains on me?
I’ve paid my dues to make it
Everybody wants me to be
What they want me to be
I’m not happy when I try to fake it!
No!

Ooh, that’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning

I wanna be high, so high
I wanna be free to know
The things I do are right
I wanna be free
Just me, babe!

That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
That’s why I’m easy
I’m easy like Sunday morning
Because I’m easy
Easy like Sunday morning
Because I’m easy
Easy like Sunday morning

  1. Love this song, especially the guitar solo! Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo, Michigan, October 1977 – the Commodores in concert! Still makes me smile. 😀

    Thanks for sharing, Lydia! 💜
