When I popped on over to This Thing Called Life One Day At A Time to see what Helen had picked for this weeks SLS theme, I cringed. It is “glass”. Right away the Blondie song “Heart of Glass” popped into my head. No, too easy. I like a challenge!
So I did some digging and this little gem popped up – “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses),” a one-hit wonder by John Fred and his Playboy Band. The reference to the theme is the glasses that a girl named Judy seems to use as her “disguise.”
The lyrics are just a jumble of words and images, describing a rather dizzying relationship. In the end, the guy just feels like his world is “a pile of ashes” and the only solution is to take Judy’s glasses.
The song was released in 1967 and was written by John Fred Gourrier and bandmate Andrew Barnard. It reached No. 1 in the US, Germany, and Switzerland, and No. 3 in Canada, United Kingdome, and Ireland.
An interesting fact is that the song is a bit of an ironic homage to The Beatle’s “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”. When John Fred first heard the song he thought that it was “Lucy In Disguise with Diamonds”. So, they decided to run with it!

Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)
Judy in disguise, well that’s what you are
Lemonade pies with a brand new car
Cantaloupe eyes come to me tonight
Judy in disguise, with glasses
Keep a-wearing your bracelets and your new rah rah
Cross your heart yeah with your living bra
Chimney sweep sparrow with guise
Judy in disguise, with glasses
Come to me tonight, come to me tonight
Taking everything in sight
Except for the strings on my kite
Judy in disguise, hey that’s what you are
Lemonade pie, hey got your brand new car
Cantaloupe eyes come to me tonight
Judy in disguise, with glasses
Come to me tonight, come to me tonight
Taking everything in sight, except for the strings to my kite
(Oh, uh oh, uhhh)
Judy in disguise, what you aiming for
A circus of a-horrors, yeah yeah, well that’s what you are
You made me a life of ashes
I guess I’ll just take your glasses

This was a bubblegum pop parody of The Beatles “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” which released a year earlier.

Yes, as I mentioned, the lead singer first misheard the title as “Lucy In Disguise” so they decided to write their own version.
